Course overview
All workplaces have potential and existing health and safety hazards that could undermine the productivity targets of the enterprise. The increasing awareness of the employees’ rights to health and safety at work and the need for organizations to comply with International Standards has intensified the importance of sound occupational health and safety practices.
In line with the relevant national laws and international conventions, the purpose of this course is to equip employers and employees with the necessary skills to identify hazards, assess the significance of hazards, and implement prescribed control strategies and to protect the workforce from adverse health and safety conditions generated from the workplace environment.
Course Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course the participants will be able to:
• Define, describe and understand the basics of a safety management system.
• Identify the seven core elements of an effective safety and health program.
• Describe the key processes in each program element.
• Appreciate the importance of getting the top management commitment in safety
• Describe the employee and employer accountabilities and responsibilities
• Gain employee involvement in safety programs
• Contribute to an effective communication in the workplace
• Conduct Hazard analysis and consider appropriate control strategies
• Make an analysis of Incident/accidents and determine root causes
• Participate in the delivery of safety education, instruction and training in the workplace
• Contribute to total quality safety management in the workplace.

Target audience
The courses are geared toward:
• Employees who have been given the responsibility of health and safety on a part-time or full-time basis, but have no formal education in health and safety.
• someone who has moved into health and safety management.
Courses can be taken individually if someone needs an introduction or wants to develop a competency in a specific health and safety topic.
Training Methodology
State-of-the-art business facilitation methods are transferred by means of short, focused presentations which are followed by experiential learning workshop sessions. In these sessions, the knowledge gained is applied to real-world examples and case studies. Rapid learning of the methods and techniques is achieved by means of group work, individual work, participant discussion, facilitator interaction and constructive feedback.
